This is a response to the Straits Times report of 14 July 2010. The NIE valedectorian and her graduates.
Teacher training and the incorporation of values.
It may be well and good for the ministry to wave the flag of teacher inculcated values. A compliment they say - but in practice can they do it? The question that arises is how are the NIE graduates taught to do this.? The teacher is not a trained counsellor and even a trained counsellor takes years of experience to be able to handle the wayward child and very often the wayward parent. They will most likely only deliver what they have learnt from their upbringing. The child who was yelled at when young has a great propensity as the teacher to yell at the child in the class. Modelling is the inescapable fact of life. Has our graduate teachers been given training and tools to relate to the vast array of personalities they meet in the typical class room? Dare we even think of transforming them with noble values?
Only a gifted teacher with the innate abilities can do that. Of course, we can't find so many Mother Theresa and Gandhis - the epitomes of value stalwarts.
Incalculating values in the educational system remains then a high and lofty aspiration. Do not take away the basic parental responsibilities. Ninety percent of the foundation will come from parents.
So what happens when companies hire?
In considering a hire, companies do well to examine the three essentials apart from just paper qualifications.
abilities
attitude
aptitude
Paper qualifications are no substitute for life skills and appropriate people skills which come with experience and innate training.
These are not only personality traits but the build up of life skills in the education system of the whole. Can a parent evaluate and mould a child to fit in the appropriate part of society? A question that begs another. Is the parent capable to do so in the first place?

To Mei Ern Ponder and reply. Life is not all about enjoyment - that's hedonism. You are a gift to this world. Use that God given gift.

You are what you Think
And what you think is seen in you face.
Each face is Years in the molding.
Can you recognize these faces? Don't laugh to loud.

You are what you READ
What do you normally read?
Fiction?
You have a fertile imagination I am sure.
Non-fiction?
You have encyclopedic knowledge I think...but not immediately
News?
You are in the know and have much to talk about to anyone
And so read on....
